Team USA IS Runner-UP In LOO CUP
England
The 10th Annual LOO CUP was held
this June at Trevose Golf and Country Club near
Padstow in Cornwall, England. Team USA was
looking for their 9th victory in this the 10th anniversary
of what was originally “The Great Pub
Challenge” but later re-named The LOO Cup.
Captain John Ufheil had been looking forward for
the last year to avenging the Americans’ only previous
loss (at Trevose) in 2006 when his father was
the captain of the American team. This year became
known as the “Ufheil Curse”. With 25 team members
representing eight different states, Team USA
arrived in London on June 7th and after a six hour
bus ride arrived in southwest England to their home
at Molesworth Manor which is owned by opponent
Geoffrey French who put on a feast for the new arrivals.
French also did a masterful job negotiating handicaps
and was overheard telling one of his teammates
that “he had picked up 35 strokes” for their side.
While riding the bus to Molesworth manor, the US
team passed the ancient ruins of Stonehenge and
this must have had a major affect on their psyche because
during the week they played like ancient ruins.
So now the ball beaters from Europe have won
20% of the time and look forward to coming to
America to LPGA International in Daytona Beach in
May of 2009 to try to improve on this record. Next
year’s US Captain Eric Albrecht, who works with
the LPGA is already thinking of playing some of the
top LPGA members against the Brits – this could
become a battle of the sexes as well – a sort of
Billie Jean King whipping the arse of Bobby Riggs.
It wasn’t all about the competition as many
of the competitors can tell you. What happens
at Trevose stays in Trevose. Just ask two of the
teammates who shall remain nameless – right
Luke and Jim. Some people just don’t need to
get up in the middle of the night – to do anything.
Food and drink were plentiful as Kevin Bowler
of Daytona Beverage made certain that a sufficient
supply of Budweiser made it to Trevose.
The host team at Trevose made certain that the
two team shared many memorable moments
with an incredible BBQ at Peter Lloyds and an
epicurean delight at Tim Burridge’s restaurant.
Daily excursions were available for Team USA
and trips to The Eden Project, the fishing village
of Padstow, and other local places of interest,
which usually included food, and Budweiser.
Yes. Team USA was this year’s runner – up in the
LOO Cup. Team Europe was the big time winner in
this match play (Ryder Cup type) competition whipping
the US 34 ½ to 17 ½. Yes. In this case runner up
was also last place. Congrats from the colonies. |
