Eagles in the Hills

There was a flock of Eagles all over the award winning Ron Garl designed Victoria Hills Golf Club located in Victoria Park, a St. Joe community in Volusia County. It was a special breed, mostly Philadelphia Eagles, that hovered throughout the Billy Casper Golf managed facility raising money for “The Wall Foundation”, which provides opportunities for young people to develop better social, professional and life skills. Their motto is “Building Up Lives One Brick At A Time”.

The field of golfers who contributed money to the Foundation got the chance to play with NFL players from the Eagles and the Jacksonville Jaguars. The morning started off with a tasty continental breakfast, with a full array of memorabilia to bid on, plus travel packages throughout the Carribean. The lady members from Victoria Hills contributed their time at the registration desk, and the entire golf staff helped in getting the pros situated with their respective teams.

William ‘Tra’ Thomas III, a Deland High School standout and Florida State Scholar Athlete, has spent the last eleven years with the Eagles. This year he decided to start the Foundation and give back to his hometown. During his tenure with the Eagles, Tra played left offensive tackle, protecting Donovan McNabb’s blindside 165 games out of 166, and garnering an All Pro award twice and Pro Bowl selection three times. In March, he joined the Jaguars, so his adoring fans from Deland and the state of Florida will get to see a lot more of him.

Head Golf Professional Matt Payne and his staff had hole-in-one contests on the par 3’s. After golf the field enjoyed a sumptuous lunch from the staff at the club’s Mulligan’s Tavern & Grille.

The players contributed more of their time at an all day football camp for local youth at Spec Martin Stadium in Deland with a Tailgate BBQ after. That night they played a basketball game against the firefighters from the area to raise more money. Tra wanted to personally thank all the sponsors and contributors.
